TOP NEWS

The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council at its November 6, 2017, meeting approved a new Ordinance that banned beach businesses from distributing plastic straws in favor of more environmentally-friendly varieties. The five Council members most likely did not know it then, but they were returning to a technology first devised 125 years ago! In 1888, Marvin Stone invented and patented the original paper straw that remained the primary format until the plastic straw craze took hold in the 1960s. Plastic straws were the principle type of straw for the next four decades, until the growing environmental movement brought back the limited return of paper straws in 2007, in response to the anti-plastic movement, opposing the ones primarily used by restaurants, hospitals and other service industries that are the main straw buyers. These outlets wanted sustainable, eco-friendly options that are marine degradable and compostable. The Town’s Prohibition of Plastic Straws Ordinance prohibits their distribution through “vending, sale, giving, deployment or delivering them for any purpose,” as plastic straws when irresponsibly discarded pose an environmental threat to the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens and visitors of Fort Myers Beach, as well as negatively impacting water quality and the surrounding marine life. “The new ordinance kicks in on Sunday, February 4; right on time for Super Bowl Sunday,” laughed Rae Burns, the Town’s Stormwater & Environmental Technician, at the irony! “This is 90 days after Council passed the Ordinance, so it is strictly a happy coincidence!”  FULL STORY

Vegas Night to Benefit Beach School
The old slogan says, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but all the proceeds from the “High Rollin’ on The Beach Vegas Night” on Saturday, February 24, stay in Fort Myers Beach, to benefit the children at the Beach Elementary School! “High Rollin’” will be held at the Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club at 175 Sterling Avenue from 6 to 10 p.m. “We were looking for unique fundraising ideas and a gaming night seemed like it would have a great appeal to our island population,” said Kristen Love, who is Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) co-President for the Beach Elementary School with Shannon Orlandini. “We think this will attract our local residents and seasonal visitors, as this gives everyone the opportunity to play numerous games, like poker, virtual horse races, roulette and black jack, using ‘Fun Money!’ Previous school fundraisers were more on the casual side, so this allows you to spend an enjoyable night out that is a little dressier than what we normally do.” Gamers play with Fun Money, receiving as their winnings raffle tickets to attempt to win fantastic prizes. “One of the best is a terrific Sunset Cruise for 8 people,” Kristen explained enthusiastically! “You and 7 friends go out on a beautiful yacht, enjoying cocktails and dinner, partying on-board for the night. Another great prize is a local business brings their boutique truck to your house for a personal shopping spree for you and your girlfriends. Those are just two examples, as we have many more quality items in the works.”  FULL STORY
