Art Walks Begin November 18th on Fort Myers Beach
One of the newest Fort Myers Beach area businesses is quickly smelling blood and putting its teeth into the local artistic community! “Our 1st Art Walk will be Saturday, November 18, from 9 a.m. to Noon,” relates Ty Wooley, general manager of The Shark Bar & Grill at 17979 San Carlos Boulevard. “Art Walks will feature roughly 30 artists, in our big grass area out back,” Ty says. “Many of these talented people already display their work inside our front gallery, but we will have about 10 new artists as well, so we are happy about that. We do have a few spaces left, with advance registration necessary by Wednesday, November 15, so get in while you still can. The cost is just $25, with artists keeping 100% of their sales.” The previous business at The Shark Bar location introduced the front art gallery concept, “but our original plan was to remove it,” explained Ty. “The venue is so unique, however, that we decided to keep it, as there is no place else around here like it, with the gallery and two bars and backyard patio. People tell us we have a real Key West-type of vibe and that is so cool!”

“Our local beaches had a record-shattering number of sea turtle nests in 2017,” reports Eve Haverfield, the founder of Turtle Time, Inc., a non-profit established in 1989 for the benefit of marine turtles on Big Hickory Island, and Bonita, Bunche, and Fort Myers Beaches. “Unfortunately, due to several severe storms, that did not translate into record numbers for hatchlings.” Most of the damage was already done, however, by the time Hurricane Irma struck on Sunday, September 10. “The heavy rain at the end of August, when the majority of the region received a foot or more of water, was devastating,” Eve recalls, “so when Irma arrived, most nests were already dead and gone. Both were a shame, however, as we had such perfect weather from early June until Tropical Storm Emily literally came out of nowhere at the end of July, so we anticipated a banner year for hatchlings and that just did not happen, mostly due to Mother Nature, but some human interference. We lost the first batch of nests to heavy rains in early June, then the second batch in late August, right when many were ready to hatch, so that was icky icing on top of a bad cake!”  FULL STORY
