Island Hopper Songwriter Fest Readies for Eighth Year

Everyone knows The Carpenter’s “We’ve Only Just Begun,” but who knows that the then-unknown Paul Williams wrote it? Patsy Cline struck it big with “Crazy,” but a young suit-wearing man with short hair named Willie Nelson penned it. “Me & Bobby McGee” made Janis Joplin a star, but previously unheard-of Kris Kristofferson authored the lyric. While it is the performer who makes a song legendary, many of our greatest and most beloved singles have a nearly anonymous writer behind the scenes, some who eventually become famous in their own right, but most who carve out long successful careers, while becoming the faceless talent behind the hit music. Now Fort Myers Beach and Southwest Floridians can experience this same sensation with the 4^th annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest from Friday, September 22 through Sunday, October 1, including performances exclusively at various Fort Myers Beach venues from Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1. Perseids, Solar Eclipse, Upcoming Celestial Shows

By now, most of us know The Great American Solar Eclipse will be Monday afternoon, August 21, but this is the weekend to start marveling at the heavens, as the month’s first fabulous celestial event takes place at night! The annual Perseids Meteor Shower (pronounced per-see’-uhds) peaks this Friday and Saturday, August 11 and 12, although this year brings both good and bad news. The good is that Perseid predictions call for a dazzling shower, with 80 to 100 meteors an hour; and it falls on a weekend that is perfect for a family adventure despite the peak time of 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. The bad is that the gibbous moon rises around 11 p.m., meaning from a primarily dark location you may see just 12 to 25 meteors per hour. To maximize this, watch from an isolated area, away from urban light pollution, with the north end of Fort Myers Beach near Bowditch Point Park a superior spot. Look to the northeast, with the radiant between the Cassiopeia and Perseus constellations.  FULL STORY

LPA Approves Fish-Tale Restaurant Consumption on Premise

At their August 8^th meeting the Local Planning Agency for the Town of Fort Myers Beach approved a Special Exception Request from Fish-Tale Marina Restaurant owner Al Durrett that would allow alcohol service and consumption in new outdoor seating areas at the former Fish House location behind Santini Marina Plaza. Steven Hartsell, attorney with the Pavese Law Firm, represented Durrett and Fish-Tale Marina Restaurant, explaining that the request for a special exception was to expand existing consumption on premise (COP) to include three outdoor seating areas, totaling 2,811 square feet – 1,030 sq. ft. for a courtyard entrance, 1,293 for a chickee hut and 488 for a dog-friendly seating area.  FULL STORY
