Council Examines Downtown Traffic Proposal
The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council, as part of its recent Strategic Planning Sessions, identified Quality of Life and Transportation as core items, with Mayor Dennis Boback assigned Transportation. As a result, he made two proposals at a special Management & Planning Session before roughly 10 people on Tuesday morning, August 22. Boback examined eliminating the northbound left turn from Estero Boulevard onto Fifth Street near Times Square, making Fifth Street’s two lanes one way northbound from Estero Boulevard to Old San Carlos Boulevard, and having southbound North Estero Boulevard be a left-turn only onto Old San Carlos Boulevard. This would route all through Estero Boulevard traffic under the Matanzas Pass Bridge onto Crescent Street, to either exit the island via Fifth Street or turn left onto Estero Boulevard to proceed south. He recommended as well opening Center Street from the Matanzas Pass Bridge to Old San Carlos Boulevard. “If you open Center Street, you will move a lot of congestion off Fifth Street, but the biggest drawback may be a bottleneck on Crescent,” he admitted.  FULL STORY

Council Approves Town reFRESH Inspector, Beach Survey and Flooding Rules Approved
The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council met on Monday morning, August 21, on numerous issues, including a potential Fort Myers Beach survey, approving a Neighborhood Flooding Ordinance, and whether to hire a Town representative to monitor reFRESH Estero Boulevard Projects. Under the Beach Survey topic, Lee County is surveying the north and south ends of Fort Myers Beach for dredging project purposes, according to Town staff. It would cost $7,000 to fill in the three-mile center gap. A complete Estero Island survey could be beneficial for future dredging projects and other issues, with a potential Tourist Development Council (TDC) reimbursement. “I don’t see the value, as my beachfront changes constantly,” said Council Member Joanne Shamp. “Unless we have a specific project, we should keep the money in the Beach Renourishment Fund.” “I understand the beach changes from time to time,” countered Council Member Bruce Butcher, “but engineering a good baseline would be worthwhile. When we talk about our strategy, we talk about the beach.”  FULL STORY

The 2017 Island Hopper Songwriter Fest returns to The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, Sept. 22-Oct. 1. This showcase, now in its fourth year, is a great way to see singer-songwriters perform in intimate settings on Captiva Island, Fort Myers Beach and historic downtown Fort Myers. This year’s headliners include Lindsay Ell and Brooke Eden. The artists will be performing at Pinchers Crab Shack at The Marina at Edison Ford on Sept. 27. Ell has opened for The Band Perry and Luke Bryan, and is currently on tour with Brad Paisley. The Canadian Country Music Association recently nominated Ell for Female Artist of the Year. Her debut single, “Worth the Wait,” was recently released in the U.S. The fourth annual music fest will continue to give fans the opportunity to meet the talented artists who write songs for country superstars including Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean and Tricia Yearwood. Attendees can listen to their favorite songs at live music venues on Captiva Island, including Key Lime Bistro, South Seas Island Resort and Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille. In downtown Fort Myers, performances will take place at The Barrel Room, Twisted Vine Bistro, City Tavern and Pinchers.
