LIFE ON FORT MYERS BEACH

LIFE ON FORT MYERS BEACH

Top News

The latest news on Estero Blvd. Construction
Those of you who haven’t been to our island in a few months are no doubt wondering what’s going on. Confronted with a maze of Bob’s Barricades upon coming over the bridge, visitors to our island this month will understandably have questions. The most important answer is, yes, we are open for business and what’s happening is a long-needed water and road improvement project that will eventually benefit everyone. And as with any improvements that involve a heavily-traveled roadway like Estero Boulevard, there will be some delays but local businesses and the Town of Fort Myers Beach are working hard to ensure those delays are minimal and our guests’ stay on the island remains a pleasant one. Library Moves Towards Total Solar

The Fort Myers Beach Library Board approved the preparation and issuance of a Competitive Negotiation Package request that would include the services of an engineer, fabricator and artist to begin the expansion of the solar program to provide electricity to the library. The Beach Library has set aside $744,000 toward a Total Solar Project whose aim is to provide all the power the library uses. Currently the library uses rooftop solar panels to supplement their electricity needs, though FPL does not provide information on how much power they deliver to the library. Swim With Caution
This week, the Sand Paper received some disturbing news from the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s weekly report on water quality – Lee County’s Environmental Lab has documented that blue green algae has moved from the Alva boat ramp downriver, and elevated levels of cyanobacteria were found at Iona, the Sanibel Causeway and along the eastern shore of Sanibel Island. In addition, the nuisance algae ‘pyrodinium bahamense’ was documented by the SCCF in Pine Island Sound. So what does this mean for the public? To use caution before entering the water, according to two scientists from the SCCF. CLICK HERE to read more.
