Town Issues Stop Work Order: Defining the Line

Last Thursday afternoon, Director of Community Development Kara Stewart issued a Stop Work Order for construction at 3050/3056 Estero Blvd via an email to contractor Joe Orlandini. Despite the concurrence of DEP Engineering Specialist Tim Besse, Lee County Plan Reviewer Randy Simes and Orlandini’s surveyor Phillip Mould of Harris-Jorgenson, that the new construction does sit landward or the Coastal Construction Setback Line, Stewart issued the order citing a discrepancy regarding the location of the CCCL.

Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ to Benefit Operation Open Arms

Matanzas on the Bay will host its third annual Bluegrass, Brew and BBQ on Saturday, May 28th from 11am-10pm to benefit Operation Open Arms, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the care and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder in military personnel and veterans. The event will feature live music from the Bugtussle Ramblers from 1-4pm and the Cooter Creek Bluegrass Band from 5-8pm. They will also have craft beer from Fort Myers Brewing Company, face-painting for children, a 50/50 raffle and a $15 barbecue buffet featuring ribs, smoked pork shanks, potato salad and corn on the cob, offered from noon to 8pm. Free car parking and boat dockage available.

Road Construction Traffic Changes on Estero Blvd. 

Some significant changes are coming to the traffic patterns on Estero Boulevard next week, as crews working on the reFRESH Estero Boulevard road reconstruction project continue to install the center lane stormwater drainage system. We ask that our residents and visitors be alert to the following: Workers will be replacing the orange barrier wall with a concrete barrier wall from Avenue C to just north of Miramar Street in preparation to regrade, rebuild and pave this section of the southbound lane. Council Approves Waterlines Loan Application

 After the workshop on Monday morning, Town Council held a ‘special meeting’ to discuss the state’s revolving fund application regarding the Town’s waterline replacement project. That project, called ReFresh Fort Myers Beach was approved by the voters via referendum in 2007 and validated in 2011. The project broke ground in 2013 when workers began replacing the Town’s aging and outdated water lines under side streets off of Estero Boulevard, Bay Beach Lane and Laguna Shores, then moved to the main road in anticipation of Lee County’s Estero Boulevard Reconstruction project. Water Discharges Slow, Recovery Begins, Solution Still Needed

Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers announced that – at least for the time being – water flows from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee River would be reduced to 2,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). Runoff from the watershed areas downriver from the lake also decreased – to approximately 2,645 cfs. Those numbers are down considerably from a couple of months ago, when heavy rains associated with this year’s El Nino event caused as much as 9,000 cfs of brown, nutrient-polluted freshwater to be discharged into the river and estuary. The result is that seagrass and oyster beds are slowly beginning to recover and Gulf waters are once again clear and healthy, though local scientists look to the coming rainy season with a wary eye.
