New Development Planned for San Carlos Island

Over a hundred residents of San Carlos Island packed the meeting hall at the Moose Lodge last Thursday night, many of them unhappy with plans to develop the old Compass Rose property into a new mixed-use residential space with a marina and 14-story condominium building.  The meeting began with Jim Ink of Inkwerks Coastal Design giving a bit of history about the property – located at the corner of Oak and Main Street – on which Compass Rose Marina sat for many years until Hurricane Charley destroyed it in 2004. Smart Solar Ballot to Supreme Court
A utility-backed ballot proposal that would outline rules about solar power in Florida was sent Tuesday to the state Supreme Court for review. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office forwarded the “Consumers for Smart Solar” proposal to the state’s top court to determine if the proposed ballot language is limited to a single subject, the wording is unambiguous and the summary meets a 75-word limit. The proposed constitutional amendment — financially backed by Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy, Gulf Power and Tampa Electric — is one of two rival solar amendments that could be on the November 2016 ballot. Get ready, Fort Myers Beach! The American Sand Sculpting Championships returns to our island next Friday, November 20th, with 16 Solo Master Sculptors and 10 Doubles Master Sculptors representing four countries and ten states coming to create ephemeral masterpieces out of our pristine white sand. The ten-day event has been ushering in the holiday season for 29 years now, and has evolved into one of the premier showcases for our little community – with the Sand Vendor Village, daily Quick Sand competitions, live music, sand sculpting demonstrations, ‘Sand Fans’ – your caricature carved in sand, Deceptionist Extraordinaire Albert Lucio, the Florida State Championships and much, much more.

Mound House Grand Opening November 14th
The much-anticipated Grand Opening of the Mound House will take place this Saturday, November 14, 2015. Fort Myers Beach residents, visitors and anyone with even a casual interest in area history or architecture are all invited to attend this all-day celebration at Estero Island’s oldest standing structure perched atop an ancient Indian Shell Mound. There are nine special presentations planned from 9am-4pm in addition to self-guided tours through the museum, special exhibits, interactive displays and gift shop. There’s much more than the museum to see too. Stroll the pet-friendly grounds, visit the observation pier, watch kayaks launch to enjoy the Calusa Blueway Kayak Trail, visit the underground Shell Mound exhibit and notice the landscaping-worth a visit all by itself - it’s a collection of plants used by area residents over the centuries of habitation on this spot.
