Turn Off a Light and Save a Turtle

Town Environmental Science Coordinator Keith Laakkonen is worried. Turtle season on our island officially began May 1st, so the first nests should be hatching any time now since the gestation period is normally between 55 and 65 days. The problem is - and what's got Laakkonen and his staff working after hours (note, Town employees are paid a salary so they do not receive overtime) - is that some beachfront property owners are still not either shielding their lights or switching to turtle-friendly lighting, and he fears this will result in the death of many baby turtles.  "The easiest way to kill a hatchling is to leave the lights on if you have a house on the beach,” he said. "And since sea turtles are endangered, the Town has had an ordinance in effect for nearly 20 years but people still do it.”  To read more: http://www.islandsandpaper.com/save-a-turtle.aspx

Fort Myers Beach Information Source

 NEWS:

Mosquito Season is Coming - Check Your Yard
Here on Fort Myers Beach, we have lots of seasons: hurricane season, turtle season, stingray season, dry season and snowbird season. While they all have their pros and cons - even hurricanes do some good in that they provide lots of rain and stir up nutrients in the ocean - there is one season that absolutely no one looks forward to - mosquito season. Like it or not, however, with the summer rains and warm temperatures come the pesky little buzzers and since this week - June 22-28 - is National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, we decided to give folks some tips on how to prevent these 'Swamp Angels' from ruining their summers. Mosquitoes are not just an annoyance, they can be deadly. While mosquito borne illnesses like malaria and yellow fever kill millions each year around the world, in this country those diseases are relatively rare. In the United States, infected mosquitoes carry West Nile Virus and Encephalitis and other diseases posing risks to both humans and animals. Fortunately, the mosquito-borne disease that's been wreaking havoc in the Caribbean lately - chikungunya, or ChikV - has not been seen on our island, and neither has West Nile or Encephalitis.  To read more: www.islandsandpaper.com/teaser1.aspx

Be Aware, Be Safe This Summer
Fort Myers Beach is a wonderful community. We are a small island town filled with folks who look out for each other, take care of each other and who take pride in the fact that they are Islanders. But, especially during the sleepy summer off-season, some seem to forget that we are different from most small towns in that our community also serves as a playground to those who come from far and wide to enjoy our emerald waters and white sandy beach. While the vast majority of our visitors love and respect our island as much as we do, there are some who come over our bridges with darker intentions in mind. Helping our residents and visitors be aware of and protect themselves from these shady characters is the job of Lee County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Specialist Gerald 'Jerry' McNulty, an easygoing deputy who is committed to teaching people how to avoid becoming victims.  To read more: http://www.islandsandpaper.com/crime-prevention.aspx
