Pink Shell designated a Clean Marina
Less than six months after commemorating a newly constructed state-of-the-art marina with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officials at a well-known beach resort on Estero Island have another reason for celebration.On Aug. 2, Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina at 275 Estero Blvd. was officially designated a Clean Marina by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.


Water Wars Escalate

With smelly, brown, nutrient-polluted water pouring into the Caloosahatchee from Lake Okeechobee and no end in sight, the water wars are heating up all over the state of Florida. Just this week, Governor Rick Scott sent a scathing letter to the Army Corps of Engineers' Southeastern Headquarters in Atlanta accusing them of 'not doing their job'. Fort Myers Beach Mayor Alan Mandel has appeared on countless news networks begging folks to write their congressmen and local conservationists and politicians have been busy planning meetings and rallies to get people behind the idea that something needs to change and it needs to change soon. Town officials are concerned about an expected increase in traffic that may affect already congested driving lanes to Fort Myers Beach if one of the largest retailer corporations in the world moves into the abandoned Summerlin Square property at the corner of San Carlos Boulevard and Summerlin Road.

Fort Myers Beach Businesses Required to Recycle




A recycling program is now mandatory for all commercial establishments on Estero Island.The Fort Myers Beach Town Council unanimously adopted an ordinance to approve the action for businesses on Estero Island during a public hearing Monday. The policy goes into effect Nov. 1, 2013. Commercial establishments will be required to recycle at least one type of recyclable material that they generate, and that matter must constitute the largest portion of the business's waste stream. For instance a bar would have to recycle bottles and/or cans.
