Fort Myers Beach News & Entertainment

Hurricane Season is here! Do you know when to get off the Island or where to go if a hurricane approaches Fort Myers Beach?

June marks the beginning of hurricane season and Fort Myers Beach is a barrier island, when a hurricane approaches a mandatory evacuation notice will usually be issued. Once the winds get above 45 miles per hour no emergency services can be expected until the storm has passed.Fort Myers Beach Town Hall has re-entry passes for residents and business owners but they must register to receive them. Lee County has five evacuation zones, Fort Myers Beach lies in Zone A with a clearance time of more than 10 hours. Once the county orders mandatory evacuations for Zone A,beach residents need to take all supplies with them and have a planned destination within a safe distance from home.Lee County has more than 20 public shelter locations including Germain Arena and local schools, that can be opened as needed to iPhone and Android devices, called LeeEvac.

Town of Fort Myers Beach Plan Big 4th of July Event

The parade festivities begin at 10am, but the Matanzas Bridge will be closing at 9am. The parade runs down Estero Boulevard, around Time Square to Old San Carlos. About 20 participants signed up for the parade so far, but The Town of Fort Myers Beach expects to see more than 30 by the time of the event. 15 minutes after sunset, one of the region’s most spectacular fireworks shows shoots off from the Fort Myers Beach Fishing Pier. That’s the main event, but restaurants, lounges, and others step up the festivities with music and fun activities in the Times Square area and throughout the beach. Pick a seat anywhere gulf-front for an amazing fireworks show!

It's Turtle Time on Fort Myers Beach

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting and Hatching Season is upon us once again on Fort Myers Beach.  Here are some facts about our little friends and also some helpful information to keep the turtles happy, healthy and alive.

Nesting and hatching season is from May 1st to October 31st.  This is an very delicate time for these Sea Turtles.  We want visitors and locals to enjoy the beach, sun, sand and surf during this summer as well as remembering to watch out for nesting areas that are along our dunes which are also homes to many other coastal wildlife.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

  • Turn off balcony lights
  • Close drapes or blinds after dark
  • Do not use flashlights, torches, lanterns or flash photography
  • Remove all beach furniture, boats, toys, tents, ect. from beach by 9PM.  (store close to your home)
  • It is against the law to touch or disturb nesting sea turtles, hatchlings or their nests

Some Fun Loggerhead Sea Turtle Facts:

  • Loggerhead turtles are classified as a "threatened" species
  • Adult Loggerheads can grow up to three feet long and weigh 200-350 pounds
  • They travel thousands of miles from their feeding grounds to their natal nesting beaches using the Earth's magnetic field to find their way
  • A female may nest from 1 to 7 times a season
  • The incubation period lasts 55 to 65 days depending on the temperature of the sand
  • Hatchlings are only about 2 inches long
  • It may take up to 30 years for a hatchling to reach full maturity

We appreciate everyone's cooperation during the turtle nesting season and all year in helping protect all the beautiful wildlife that Fort Myers Beach has to offer.

Green City Philosophy

There has never been a greater need for the people planning and running our cities, as well as the residents themselves, to understand the critical significance of green space in our urban environment. Working with green is a way to respond to the true needs of people when designing buildings, the public realm, transport and communications infrastructure. This is a goal to which every professional can apply themselves. These guidelines are a starting point so interested parties can come together internationally and discuss techniques for urban development. For more of this story and for a PDF of the guidelines please follow: http://www.greenconduct.com/blog/2013/05/21/guide-green-city-philosophy/
